51% of FM teams report understaffing — but the bigger gap is in compliance, digital and sustainability skills: SFG20
SFG20's State of Facilities Management 2026 Report, based on nearly 200 built-environment professionals, finds 51% of organisations report a shortage of FM staff. More striking: the top skills gaps are compliance and safety (42%), digital and IT (42%), and sustainability and energy (32%) — and 43% of respondents want next year's training budget increased. Kirsty Cogan, SFG20 MD, frames it as a self-reinforcing cycle where short-term cost pressures lock teams into reactive maintenance.
